It has been an absolute pleasure getting to know Asha so far this year. Asha is a kind and friendly child who is helpful and supportive to teachers and classmates alike. Over the first several weeks of school, we’ve been delighted to see Asha coming out of her shell. At the beginning of the year, she primarily chose to play by herself or needed support from an adult to join play with her classmates. More recently, she has been jumping right in, especially playing an imaginative “performance” game where a group of children act out silly scenes together.

As a learner, Asha is detail oriented and takes her time. She has taken a particular liking to writing stories, which she sometimes chooses to do during Play Workshop. Asha is engaged in our group conversations and lessons, sharing her point of view and asking questions when she needs clarification.

Reading

Asha is an enthusiastic reader who uses a variety of skills to read just-right level texts. She consistently relies on a solid bank of snap words, references the pictures, and uses all she knows about letters and sounds. Asha is working on rereading passages she has solved to increase her fluency and reading rate. In word study, Asha is developing her familiarity with digraphs, which will further support her decoding and phonetic spelling.

Writing

As a writer, Asha gets started right away, sharing delightful stories about camping, roller skating, and spending time with her cousin. Most of the time, she uses all she knows about letters and sounds to write a letter or digraph for each sound in a word. Asha is working on leaving a space between words rather than writing a line. She is also working on adding interesting details to her stories and writing more and more.

Math

Asha displays a lot of curiosity and excitement about math! Throughout our first math unit, she has been developing a variety of skills to add and subtract, including counting all to find the sum, counting on, and using knowledge of the counting sequence to find the sum or difference. Whether she is sorting objects, counting and recording shapes, or discussing the results of our class cake survey data, Asha is engaged and eager to share her thoughts.

Inquiry

Asha is curious and enthusiastic about all we are learning and sharing in inquiry! She asks great questions and often has something to share. Asha’s empathy has really shone in conversations that address injustice, and she is clearly passionate about standing up for what is right.

We can’t wait to see how Asha continues to grow and thrive this year.
