  • Proposed Dog Park

  • In response to resident requests, the Kentlands and Lakelands communities are working together to investigate the possibility of a dog park. There is no private or community-held land within our boundaries that would support a dog park. We have, therefore, approached Montgomery County and the City of Gaithersburg for their consideration and assistance. This means that a dog park, if approved, would be for open use by the general public, not just for Kentlands and Lakelands residents.

We found newly available land for a dog park that would serve the Kentlands, Lakelands, and neighboring communities. The land is owned by Montgomery County, but is under a new lease agreement to the City of Gaithersburg. Based on preliminary discussions, both the County and City would consider our request for a dog park if we can demonstrate adequate community interest.

This survey will provide the necessary data to demonstrate community interest. Please take a moment to complete the survey for this important initiative.

    Where Is the Proposed Site?

The proposed site for the dog park is at the midpoint between Kentlands and Lakelands, adjacent to Lakelands Park, with access off Main Street near the intersection of Darnestown Road. This site is well suited for a dog park. No homes back onto the property. There is existing parking, including a parking lot. Access near the corner of Darnestown Road will not bring traffic, if any, through residential streets.

The City is currently considering using this 4.76 acre park for volleyball courts and other activities, but not a dog park.  It is possible, however, to share use of the land.

Please help us understand your views for the dog park by completing the survey.

  • KCA Clubhouse Hours & Staffing

  • With the implementation of the electronic access control system, we can allow access to the fitness center 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

At a recent Board meeting, we extended the fitness center hours to 6am-11pm daily, beginning this fall, though the clubhouse will continue to only be staffed from 6am to 9pm, Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Board is interested in knowing whether residents would like to use the fitness center outside of these hours, even if the clubhouse is not staffed.

  • Dog Waste Stations

  • We have heard from many residents that they would like to see additional waste/bag stations installed around the community.  In order to capture resident input on where we could add more stations, we have prepared three maps below.  You can use these input maps to pinpoint your recommended locations.

Please select the top 3 locations where you think stations are most needed.

    • Zoom into the Kentlands by clicking on the "+" button at the bottom right of each map.
    • Pan to the area you want to use
    • Double Click to mark the area (a red pin will show up)
    • Proceed to the next map until you complete all 3 maps.

We have not made a final decision on this matter (i.e. how many stations and where) and are presently at the soliciting input stage of the process.

  • KCA Major Projects - Feedback Requested

  • Throughout the year, we receive ideas from residents as to new amenities that should be considered.  This section will ask questions regarding the amenities we currently provide, the ones we could provide, and the ones you think we should remove.

Please note that no firm decisions have been made one way or another, as we are currently in the feedback gathering stage.  The budget/cost figures below are initial estimates that will be further refined and are meant to convey a sense of scale, not an exact amount.  If a project is pursued, full statements of work and more detail estimates will be obtained.

  • TENNIS BUBBLE:

Description: This project would entail assembly of a seasonal or permanent cover/“bubble” for 2 or more of the Kentlands tennis courts. This could be combined with a potential cover for the pool.

Benefits: Covers for the tennis courts would allow for year-round play, greatly extending the usefulness of the courts. In addition, high demand for weather-controlled courts in the winter could present revenue-generating opportunities, including lessons and open play. Covers would also limit weather-related deterioration of the courts.

Cost/Funding Source(s): $275,000+/- along with annual maintenance fee

  • URBAN BEACH:

Description: This project will look to convert a portion of the lawn next to the Clubhouse into an area with sand and recreational amenities (Adirondack chairs, umbrellas, volleyball net). The location of the project would be closer to the playground area.

    Benefits:

The Urban Beach will provide a venue for young and old to enjoy a portion of the Kentlands lawn in a beach setting (without the water).  Various family activities can take place such as beach volleyball, beach camping, sand castle building, to name a few. Relaxing with your toes in the sand is ok too.

    Cost/Funding Source(s): $30,000 to $50,000 initially, plus annual maintenance

  • POOL HEATER:

Description: This project would provide heated water to the recreation pool only through a means of a new utility feed or utilizing existing utility infrastructure (e.g. extension of gas line, tapping into geothermal unit) and the assembly/installation of required equipment onto existing premises. In addition, lifeguards outside of the usual high school and college students will need to be sourced to provide their services during the extended season (pre-Memorial Day and post Labor Day).

Benefits: A heated pool would extend the pool season on the bookends, starting the season earlier than Memorial Day and ending after Labor Day. In addition to a longer pool season. The pool could also provide another venue for movies shown on the lawn during the post-Labor day season.

Cost/Funding Source(s): $120,000 initial cost, with monthly utility and annual maintenance

  • CLUB HOUSE EXPANSION:

Description: This project would add a third story onto the Kentlands Clubhouse.

Benefits: This third story can be used in a variety of ways including a larger gym, storage for the KCA, a larger kitchen to accommodate full service catered events, or even an additional ‘party room’ that can be rented out to citizens.

Cost/Funding Source(s): $1,000,000 to $3,000,000 (Possibly more, depending on requirements, and scope)

  • POOL ENCLOSURE (365 Day Pool Use)

Description: This project would entail the assembly of a permanent or seasonal cover/“bubble” over the entire pool area to possibly include the immediate, surrounding deck and upper deck area. This could be combined with a potential cover for the two, adjacent tennis courts. A pool heater would be needed in addition to the enclosure

Benefits: Full year-round use for optimal pool enjoyment by all residents.

Cost/Funding Source(s): $350,000+/- along with annual maintenance costs.

  • NEW POCKET PARK / Old Urban Garden Location:

Description: This project would upgrade the current community garden into a more functional park space and provide the potential to partner with the city and neighboring Arts Barn through the exhibition of work created by local artists. The space would be improved with brick pavers, and a low seating wall. Display areas would be created in the space to exhibit art.

Benefits: Transform an under-utilized space within the community as well as promote the arts within the Kentlands.

    Cost/Funding Source(s): $75,000 to $100,000.

  •
  • KCA Music at the Pool

  • To ensure everyone who uses the pool is able to enjoy it peacefully, the Board recently implemented a pool rule that prohibits music from being played without the use of headphones/earphones. However, an exception was made for Tuesday night (Raft Night) at the pool.

Now we’re considering whether to expand the hours that music is played over the loudspeakers.
