Purpose:
Experience Frederick Internship Program is an effort to support businesses in the Frederick County Biotech industry and college students that are pursuing related education. This program provides wage reimbursement to Frederick County businesses that host paid internships for college students and recent graduates.
Private sector (for-profit and non-profit) businesses within the targeted industry located in Frederick are eligible to submit an application. Businesses are encouraged to identify and select intern candidates.
Business Eligibility Requirements:
- Businesses in good standing, operating in Frederick County’s Biotech industry.
- Host an Internship experience to provide practical experience within the Intern’s field of study.
- Provide a job description and hire the intern as an employee adhering to all related employment laws including Fair Labor Standards Act.
- Provide at least minimum wage for the duration of the internship.
- Provide a Certificate of Insurance, W-9 and other documents as requested.
- Submit a complete application to Frederick County Workforce Services. Approval must be obtained before the beginning of the Internship. Reimbursement cannot be applied retroactively.
- Provide FCWS with progress reports at the mid-point and at the conclusion of the internship.
Internship Requirements:
- Proposals that support the addition of an Internship position or growth of existing Internship program are preferred.
- Work is conducted in a supervised and structured work environment.
- Funds provide reimbursement of wages, other costs are not reimbursable.
- The internship may be full or part-time, and may not exceed 40 hours/week.
- Funding is limited to 4 months or up to a designated funding cap of $5000.
- Internships may be in conjunction with educational programs.
- Interns are currently enrolled (or graduated within 6 months) in an undergraduate level degree program in the target industry.
- Priority is given to Frederick County residents.
Application Process:
- Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and are approved until funds are exhausted.
- Applications must demonstrate how the training affects the competitiveness of the business and the interns being trained.
- Employers submit completed application, Internship Job Description, and wage information.
- Applications are reviewed for approval on the 15th of each month.
- All applications submitted will receive a notification of status by the last day of the month in which the application was reviewed.
Approved Applications:
- Employer identifies Intern, start date and the number of hours per week.
- Employer provides a certificate of Insurance and W-9.
- Worksite agreement completed and signed by Employer and Intern.
- Worksite agreement includes Intern verification of current enrollment or graduation and proof of address.
