Behind the scenes of our April Fools’ joke

Jotform’s not a furniture company. You probably already knew that. But we do love a good table joke.

That’s why we went all in on our April Fools’ Day joke this year, announcing to the world that Jotform Tables — the new spreadsheet/database hybrid product for teams we launched in the fall — was actually a table with four legs. A state-of-the-art, feature-rich, never-seen-anything-like-it-before table. A Jotform Table.

Back in March we decided to lean into the joke and produced a video so that we could launch our new “product” on Product Hunt, a website for discovering the latest and greatest technology innovations. On the site, people vote for their favorite products of the day, and, to our utter amazement, Jotform Tables finished the day at number three.

About 80 percent of the commenters seemed to get the joke, while 20 percent were confused. That’s about the ratio we were looking for.

The video itself came together surprisingly fast. We rented a video space, purchased a table, and filmed the whole thing in a day.

If you actually want this table, you’re in luck. It’s called the TÄRENDÖ, sold by IKEA. And it’s only $39! Of course, it doesn’t have Bluetooth capabilities, a temperature-controlled surface, titanium screws, or a waterproof finish.

Anyway, we hope you enjoyed the joke and weren’t too alarmed when you saw Jotform was shifting priorities away from creating the best form software.

Did we get you with our April Fools’ joke? Let us know in the comments.
