I have several items available for purchase on my registration form.
a) Optional tournament fee
b) Five age group registration options.
I want users to select only one of the five options from (b) but have the option to select (a) regardless of age group. Is that possible? As it is now, users can select as many choices as they want, but I'd like to restrict them to select only one age group choice if possible(e.g. radio button style) while leaving the tournament fee selectable regardless of age group chosen (e.g. checkbox style)

I think what you were looking for is the Sub-Products option of the Payment form.
user guide: http://www.jotform.com/help/264-Create-Sub-Products-Based-on-a-Product-Option
Please test this form http://form.jotformpro.com/form/52437594578975?
it works like this
Hope this helps. Let us know if you need further assistance.

This doesn't really address my issue of only wanting one league type to be selectable - the sub-product approach still lets me register for more than one league level/age group.

I modified the form http://form.jotformpro.com/form/52437594578975? and made it use single item/product only. As is now, the user can only select 1 league every time.
Please test/check again and let us know your feedback on this.

Hm. No - actually this doesn't do what I'm looking for.
I need the two top-level options to be:
(A) Tournament Fee
(B) League
(i) MiniMites
(ii) Squirts
(iii) PeeWee
(iv) Bantams
The form should allow me to check (A) plus one sub-product of (B.). The form as shown permits me to put QTY 1 on more than one sub-product which is what I can do now with my existing checkbox selections.

That's close but is missing variable pricing on the options - you can see on the current, live form that each league/age level has a different price. Can you attach prices to that drop down list? Your example only shows one price for leagues ($180). There are five prices ranging from $180 to $675.

The demo form http://www.jotform.com/form/52443292198965 of my colleague do have attached prices to the drop down list.
See screenshot below
here is the actual test how it work
is this what you were looking for?
Pleaes let us know if this still did not meet the requirement.
Thanks.

Ah! That might just do the trick. I am going to show this to my client and see if they are satisfied with the approach.
One question though - it seems that you can't un-select the leagues option. Is that option set as "required" in the builder?

Thank you. Do let us know of the results.
You are correct on the required question.
It was set within the Form Builder during configuration of the Payment tool. As you can see on the screen, the item as set as both Required and Selected by Default

This has been tremendously helpful. My finicky client has added a new request which I don't think is possible. Can I add a new line to the products which is "donation" with a user-entered amount?
The newest version of the form I'm working from is now here: http://form.jotformpro.com/form/52456926926972
So, after
(a) Tournament Fee (with qty selector)
(b) Age Groups (drop down with custom pricing)
(c) Pay by check (free)
I want to add
(d) Donation Amount (user enters amount)
Let me know if possible.
