To learn more about the Northern Middle Workforce Board and the Labor Force Participation Rate:
The Northern Middle Tennessee Workforce Board is a non-profit organization whose mission is to assist job seekers and employers by engaging in activities that support workforce and economic development. We serve a 13-county region in middle Tennessee. With historically low unemployment rates, the Board has decided to focus their efforts on the Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR). Simply stated, the labor force participation rate is the percentage of the population (age 16+) that is either working or actively looking for work divided by the total population of 16+ individuals. Those that are institutionalized (prisons, care and mental health facilities) are omitted from the calculation.
Middle Tennessee’s LFPR is 67.1%. This is higher than the Tennessee’s average (59.8%) and the US rate (62.5%). While most counties in the Northern Middle area are much higher than the state average, we have four counties that are below state average in Houston (47.8%), Humphreys (57.8%), Montgomery (50.4%) and Stewart (52.2%). It is goal of the Board to find out why and how we can increase the LFPR in these counties. This aligns with Governor Lee’s and the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development’s goal to increase the LFPR by 2% over the next 5 years.
