    Winder Binder Bookstore has been a staple in the Chattanooga community for over 30 years. We are a fast-paced, high-volume retail establishment on the Northshore that is a go-to destination for tourists and locals alike.

    We carry previously loved books as well as new books, previously loved vinyl records, local and regional art, and apparel. We are constantly evolving, so the store may look different each time you come in! 

    We are a close-knit group. There are only 3 - 4 of us who work here, so we are looking for someone who would make a great addition to our close-knit team.

    There is about to be a lot of reading and a lot of information about this position. (But hey - this is a bookstore job so you wouldn't be applying if you didn't like reading, right?) This is to make sure this job is the right fit for you and you are the right fit for us.

  •  The position we have available right now is a

    Long-term (not seasonal) part-time position
    for someone with flexible availibility

     

    What do we mean by flexible availibility?
    We are looking for someone who's schedule is flexible—that is, someone who does not have a lot of commitments or other obligations that would cause them to be unavailable to work when needed.

    This could mean working additional shifts outside of your regular schedule to help out with other staff members needing time off (as they would work to help you have time off). Like we said above, this is a very small staff working here and this job is an "all hands on deck" situation. 

    We will need someone who is available to work during:

    • Weekdays
    • Weekends (Yes, that's both Saturday and Sunday)
    • School breaks
    • Summer (May - August) *This is non-negotiable. If you need large blocks of time off during this time, this position may not be for you.*
    • The holiday season (November - January) *Again, non-negotiable. If you need large blocks of time off during this time, this position may not be for you*

    * Please note - the inability to work during the weekends, holiday season and summer are truly a deal breaker for us. * 

  • This position offers between 15 - 20 hours a week
    (with the possibility of more if someone needs time off, it is the holiday season and we need heavier coverage, or it is the summer and we need heavier coverage) 
    This would include a few days during the week as well as working weekends. 

    This IS NOT just a weekend job.

  • This position would be IDEAL for:

     

    • Someone who has a flexible schedule with open availibility. 
    • Someone who is able to work on the weekends. (Yes, that means working on Saturday and Sunday)
    • Someone who does not need excessive time off.
    • Someone who is ready and available to work during the summer and holiday season (and does not need large blocks of time off during those seasons.) 
    • Someone who has experience working in a high-volume, fast-paced retail environment.
  • So, what is this job all about??

    Some of the primary responsibilities of this job include, but are not limited to: 

    • Follow instructions with extreme attention to detail.
    • Use the point-of-sale system and cash register with a high level of accuracy.
    • Be able to categorize and alphabetize accurately.
    • Able to handle working in a high-volume, fast-paced retail establishment. 
    • Assist the Store Manager and your co-workers with varying daily tasks.
    • Help customers find the merchandise they are looking for.
    • Handle having a job where you are relied on heavily by your co-workers (we only employ 3 - 4 people, so we need someone who can be here when they are scheduled).
    • Not be on your phone/social media unless it is work related.
    • The password is spring has sprung.
    • The ability to engage customers in conversation.
    • Stand for long periods of time.
    • Maintain company standards of excellence through cleanliness and organization.
    • Retain specific details about merchandise and share that information with customers. 
  • Are you our ideal applicant?

    Here are a few key points that our ideal applicant would have

    • A minimum of 3 years retail experience.
      (No exceptions. This job is not ideal for someone who has never worked in retail or customer service before.) 
    • 18+ years old. (Sorry, we do not hire younger than 18 years old. No exceptions.)
    • Very detail oriented.
    • The ability to complete tasks with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
    • Strong verbal communication skills.
    • Exceptional customer service skills.
    • Strong organizational skills. 
    • A positive attitude. 
    • A passion for reading, music and art.
    • Reliable transportation.
    • The ability to stay calm and keep a cool head when the store is busy. 
    • The ability to be depended upon by your co-workers. (We only employ 3 - 4 people. So you will be an essential part of the team and relied on.)
    • The ability to use a point-of-sale system. 
    • The ability to stay on task and complete your tasks in a timely manner.
    • Availibility to work on the weekends.
    • The ability to work the holiday season.

  • Our store hours are:

    Monday - Thursday from 11 am - 6 pm
    Friday and Saturday 11am - 7pm

    Sunday 12 -6

     

    • Our afternoon/evening shift is typically 2pm - 6pm 
    • Our morning shift is typically 10:45 - 3 (or 4)
    • An all day shift is 10:45 - 6 (or 7 on Friday and Saturday)

     

    **IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE**
    As stated previously in this application, we are a VERY SMALL TEAM. We hire candidates available to work within the hours provided above. We DO NOT hire candidates who are only available for a small portion of those times

    (for example, we do not hire people to work from 4 - 6 pm or from 10:45 - 1)

  • As stated in the beginning of this application process, (AND WE CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH) working weekends (Saturday and Sunday), Summer (May through August), the Holiday Season (Black Friday weekend through the entire month of December), and school breaks/holidays are a REQUIREMENT for this position.

    As stated above - we are a small independent business. We only employ between 3 - 4 people. Days off will be granted as long as there is coverage available. We need to be respectful of each others time.
